Default motors tired

everytime i go to the track my times get worse and worse, my motor has 144k on it and i can feel the power loss. Its getting pretty bad. Now that i got a daily driver i can finally start working on the mustang. I currently have the cobra upper and lower intake manifolds so i was thinking about getting a gt40 crate motor but thats a little out of my price range. I wouldnt mind rebuilding my motor, i have the experience but dont know what parts would compliment each other. I also have a friend thats selling a 1999 explorer motor for like 400 bucks. I know people do swaps with them but i dont know which year is the performance motor. Basically i am asking for advice on whether i should get a new motor/block or just rebuild this one and if i should rebuilt then what performance parts would be the best combination. (heads, cam, pistons, etc...) sorry if im a pain in the a$$, i know hundreds of people have asked these questions but i cant find what i want. Thanks guys.

Not sure on what you have to spend but Ford Racing has a ton of selections catered to different budgets.

Might be worth looking into.

99 explorer motor is going to have cast pistons.

87 to 92 would be your best bet.

If you rebuild yours, go with a lighter piston than the stock ones. Also have arp rod bolts installed. I like Total Seal for rings. Have the crank and rods checked and polished if you can get away with it. Oh course new bearings.

Also, it would be a good idea to buy a motor so, your car doesn't have to sit for a long time. I would get the low mileage motor and do the things I mentioned above. You may even get away with just putting rings in it, if the block is still true.

Don't even consider a gt40 crate engine. Ford is practically stealing from people who buy those.

yeah i know they want like 6gs for a H/C/I setup... I think im just going to work with the motor i have in it now. I think next on my list is to try to find some gt40 heads off an explorer and do get some pistons and rings... i know these rings are fried, i blow lots of smoke

lol^^^only problem with such engines, they are mass produced and can be anywhere from a .030-.060, I just pulled apart one and it was .060 and .020 on the mains and rods
