auto trans ?

If the transmission has never really been serviced, 140,000+ miles would makes sense for it to start acting up. Not to mention the AOD is not a strong nor very durable transmission. Repeated acceleration will quickly weaken it. The AODE and 4r70w transmissions are much stronger and can handle some decent numbers. But like I said, add fresh fluid and a filter and see how that works. If not scrap the AOD and get a used one. But make sure your friend adds a decent transmission cooler. You can get them for $50 and they WILL prolong the life of the trans. The #1 failure of transmissions is HEAT

But the good news is, you can have it removed and a new one put in in a day. When I was 16, I did the swap myself, with the help of a friend who handed me all the tools. It's pretty easy to do, provided you can get your hands on a transmission jack. Ebay might be a fun place to look at..

Funny thing is, I bought my silver 95 GTS for $3100 back in May. It looked good and ran strong. Until parts started failing. Cats clogged, EGR bad, somewhat overheats(230 degrees), transmission grinds in reverse and......it began to knock like crazy. The motor inside looks like crap. 130,000 miles my A$$. Try 200,00. So, the motor is apart and a new short block is going in this week. $3,100 turns into $5,000+!!! Clunkers...........

His AOD is toast, bottom line. You can change the fluid and it may help, but it would not be a permanent fix. You can find them fairly cheap, I have a good one sitting in my shop that I pulled out of a running car for $50, and a good one in my 89 that's coming out in a week or 2 so I can install my C4.
