Default Help with R & P replacement

Peeps,

Trying to take off the rack and pinion but I'm having some difficulty getting it out from the steering shaft. How does this thing come out?

Remove the bolt that clamps the shaft onto the rack, then pry that end open with a wedge or screwdriver. You'll see it's slotted.

Thought it might be something like that. I was trying to take it off, but couldn't get a socket on there good enough.

Is a special tool needed for that bolt? I got a socket on it, but it's just spinning. I don't want to ruin it.

If you turn the wheel(which turns the steering shaft) it is VERY easy to get off with a 12 point socket. Only a 12 point socket. I just took mine off two days ago... the bolts are the easy part, breaking the shaft from the rack due to rust is the fun part.

ive had luck taking the shaft off the column, dropping it down till you can easily remove from rack.

Agreed you can get to it easy by turning the wheel just be careful and use a 12pt so you dont strip it. also dont try to force the bots out when you get the nuts off it will seperate...one bolt or other doesnt come out well till the rag joint is seperated from the shaft

Just trying to close threads properly, so that if anyone else is looking to do the same thing will know what worked (for me anyway).

This did the trick. Removed the two bolts connecting the rack to steering column. Removed the two connections for the power steering pump and return. Pulled the entire thing out, then removed the clamp. Put the clamp on the new one and slid everything back in place.
