Question Clutch install with long tube headers

Long story short, I just bought a 1993 LX 5.0 SSP last weekend knowing it needed its clutch replaced. I also knew it had BBK LT headers. I did not know it is a PITA it is to drop the T5 with LT headers in the way. Changing the clutch out isn't a problem, I'm comfortable with that project and have the time to do it. But having to remove the headers, from what I've read, basically doubles the length of the job. Correct?

Due to time constraints, I was considering just paying a mechanic to put in the clutch, but if my install bill is going to double that's a different story. The car isn't a daily driver, so the car can be on stands for a while, but I'm not sure this is a project I want to start. Does anyone have any experience/wisdom/horror stories they would care to share?

Yea buy shorties and when you pull the long tubes to replace the clutch sell them to someone else and install the shorties.

I've considered that, but then I would need to buy a new catted x-pipe. In the end, I think cost wise it would be a wash.

Anyone know is if I actually need to completely remove the LTs from the car, or can I just loosen them and let them hang in place? That might give me the clearance I need, not sure though.

you might find that clearance is not an issue if you unbolt the trans from the bellhousing first. with just a bellhousing left, you could turn & twist it any way you want to, to wrestle it out.

shouldnt be a problem but if they are in the way just loosen the headers a little and you should have the clearance you need. your not the only person to run long tubes and ive never heard of the clutch swap being a major issue

i don't loosen anything or remove them.

like stated b4, pop the 4 bolts from the tranny, then just take out the bell housing..

i have MAC LT's and they don't have a single flange, so i have to leave mine on anyways
