Default Exhaust system

While reading the exhaust clip/description thread and looking at lots of signatures it appears to me that many guys here are running aftermarket 'cat-back' systems with stock headers and H-pipe. Perhaps those parts are just not mentioned in the posts, or is the 'front' part of the exhaust (headers and h-pipe) not as critical to replace than the cat-back portion? Will installing only a cat-back system (ie 2-1/2" flow tubes, mufflers, tailpipes) with the stock 1-1/2" headers and 2-1/4" H-pipe provide worthwhile performance gains - at least on a stock or mildly modified 5.0L?

Thanks
T

the front of the exhaust is the most expensive part and aslo the hardest to install so often over looked. There is alot of HP that can be gained from a good set of headers and a mid pipe and anyone serious about getting power will upgrade them. I just put a set of BBK shorty headers that goes into my magnaflow catted x pipe and then into dynomax side exhaust mufflers.

the catback alone will have minimal gains as far as hp goes, the only thing that will be noticable will be the sound. if you really want gains get the catback with an off road h or x pipe and longtube headers (you can get shorties but for the money people say they are not worth it) hope that helps

because most often don't have the money to revamp the entire exhaust, shop right and a complete exhaust cn be had relatively cheap, I just did such for my 89 , 140.00 for new tail pipess, mufflers/flowtube set up 50.00, and h-pipe and equal length shorties 125.00, so for 315.00 I had a complete aftermarket set up that was 2 1/2 headers were 1 5/8's......most spend that much on just the catback
