i know the bulbs are good because the emergency lights work and the lights when the headlights are on and when i put the car in reverse. it's just when i step on the brake, the lights don't indicate so, same with my third brake light.

There is a seperate filament for the brake lights, it is totally possible that they are all dead at the same time. do not presume they are good without looking at them.

No, each bulb is independent. How do you know the b/l switch is good? Do you have power in and power out of it?
