Default 5.0 HO blocks?

Hi everyone!
if you don't feel like reading the backstory just skip to the end lol
I just got a '94 GT with a 5.0 H/O, i got it for a trade with a Bronco II so not really caring about what shape it's in but it LOOKS great, the engine is a different story though.
So, it smokes like a chimney, it makes a host of strange noises and doesn't really idle like I would think is good (very rough) it still has power though, but going on the fact that it has the original plugs and wires (they say 1994!) and someone let the P/S run dry, it's pretty safe to say the oil was changed about never.
Now, it still runs and drives, so what i want to do is find a doner engine from a bone yard (maybe something with a spun bearing or something i can get cheap) and rebuild that while I drive so i can just do a swap in a week so i have less downtime.

now here is my question:
what can i look for to replace my 5.0 HO? what years did they make it? with a normal 5.0 block work? would a 5.0 out a a truck be different? are there any options i can do that might make a better build?

Hmmm well to be honest with you a gt40 motor form a 96 exploere would be a prime canidate for doing that, however HO can be found in mark vii cars as well as stangs
or if you dont mind swapping some stuff around ,you can do an HO conversion on a regular 87 and up 302. thinkgs youll need upper and lower intake E7 heads or higher
19 lb injectors , stang cam , pretty much just make sure all the acc are in the right place and your grinning. hope that helps.reg 302 dont have the forged pistons though, but it will run rather nicley, i have some freinds who run 15's with thier Ho converted 4400lb cars crownvic, merc, and lincoln townies.

Best option is a wrecked 94 GT. Then the motor is a direct swap. You could do it in a weekend.

EEEEEEGGNNHHHHH WRONG

his best option is to find an explorer motor, like already stated..

why? because it has GT40 heads, GT40 intake.. and they are usually less beaten than mustang motors

+1 explorer motors not carry a MUSTANG name to them and most junk yards dont know what they actualy are so you get it cheaper and youll make more power

What about the cams in the Mustang 5.0's and the Explorer? Do they carry the same lift duration ect, or are they completely different cams?

I have seen alot of people talking about these GT40 Heads and Intakes but nothing about the cams. Im rebuilding a 302 HO from an 87 Mustang and was thinking of adding those GT40 goodies

exactly...

while you are at it... get an adjustable timing gear set, and retard the stock cam between 2-4°

SOTP increase?? i'd like to think so

96-97.5 would be best, but 96-2000 is ok.

if you get a newer block and plan on using the heads, make sure you get the appropriate headers (and I dont mean the ones from the truck)
