Unless it was originally sold in California it should be speed density. In '89 all cars came mass air. California smog regulations pushed Cali cars to have the mass air becase it measures the air flow better than speed density, so it makes the car a little more efficient, it also improves performance.

MAF actually dropped the horsepower by a few ponies, but it's better for when you're adding mods, and for your fuel efficiency.
