Smog removal
#21
I have a question about a part of the smog system. I deleted mine a wile back and when i baught the car it wasnt hooked up. They did leave the tube going into the block connected. What does it do and is it hurting me to leave it? I am trying to understand if it would be causing any problems.
The OP will discover that not only is this tube very difficult to get to, but it is on there GOOD....I would just remove the smog pump & block off the tube....just my .02
I did finally remove it when I pulled my motor, at that point it was a piece of cake.

How do i block it off and do i just cut at it as much i can then? Also the little vacuum line from the hose to the egr what do I do with that, wont my CEL light go on if that's disconnected? Iy looks like it would be very difficult to get off as its old and rusted.

I believe the only CEL light that will come on is when you disconnect the EGR solenoid itself. That's what EGR eliminators are for. Codes will come up but the CEL will be gone.
That metal tube supplies exhaust gas for the EGR to inject into the air intake to reduce combustion chamber temperatures to improve emissions.
You will need to seal it unless you want exhaust leaks. I just crimped the tube right at the midpipe and then welded the crimp shut. Almost as good as a mid pipe without an EGR tube.

I did something different than everyone else here when it comes to blocking off the air tube off the heads. I left the tube on just in case I cannot pass emissions w/o the parts there, or I decide to sell the stang to someone needing emissions. All I did was unscrew the mushroom-shaped hose connector and capped the end off with a threaded bronze end cap (I painted it when I painted the engine). I can't remember what size the end cap was though. You can see from the pic below. This is so much easier to do than trying to get the bolts into the back of the heads.

If your crimping it... make sure you stick some sealant in there before crimping, so there are no air holes(but let it set!). I welded mine after crimping.
You could always put a hose on it and then use a hose clamp and bolt to close it off. Exhaust leaks are annoying.

As for the H-pipe...I had the H-pipe off the car and filled up the tube with JB weld. I used tape to hold the JBW in and turned the h-pipe upsidedown so the JBW pooled at the end of the tube. It doesn't leak and it should hold pretty good. Plus, if I need to attach a tube on the end to complete the look, I can.
