For the lifters you have to remove the upper/lower intake manifold. It's not hard. But if you have never done it before it can be a bit tricky and time consuming. If it was me, I would yank off the valve covers and re-torque the rocker arms and check for any looseness with the pushrods. Since the valve cover would be off and the headers would be accessible, I would replace the header gaskets as well. If the ticking persists, then my bet would be on the lifters. And you're right, 70,000 miles is not that much.

This is what I would do:

1. Start with tightening the headers. Look for the bolts that hold the headers to the head and see if any are loose. Then go under the car and tighten up the exhaust pipe/H pipe where it meets the header.

2. Restart the car and if you still hear the ticking it is most likely in the valve train-heads. It sounds like that is where it is to me.

3. Take off the valve covers and see if any of the rocker arms are loose-if so find the correct procedure for adjusting your rockers-depends if they are stock pedestal or fully adjustable roller rockers.

4. If the rockers all look tight then most likely a lifter which is a much bigger job-I had one go bad after 1000 miles on a fresh rebuild.

Good luck
