Default burning oil?

every 2000 miles the check engine light comes on. and the oil level is pretty low. its been th same way for the last few times i can remember. theres a lil minimal oil leak but nothin drastic. could it be burning oil? any other causes for it to be that low after only 2000 miles?

What are the codes when the CEL is on?

Its normal to burn some oil but how low is yours? A quart or 2? If so, thats abnormal.

Take alook at the PCV system to make sure thats working correctly. You could also do a compression test of the cylinders as well as a cylinder leakage test to see if you have worn rings ect.

checked codes. no codes. the dipstick was right around the bottom line of the add mark. i changed the oil. the oil amount that came out was enough to fill up around 2.5 quart bottles.

+1 My 86 burns a quart every 1k. Beings I bought it new I took it back to the dealer and was told it is normal for the 5.0. I slowed down the process to every 1500 miles by running straight 50 wt oil

Try a decent synthetic oil like Mobil 1 in a 10W-30 and you may find the oil burning reduced even further, along with improved fuel economy, a cooler engine and better throttle response/more power.

Old dead thread I know but I made an account just to advise against advice given in the last posting in this thread. Using synthetic oil in an '86 engine? Sure, after a rebuild maybe. Otherwise it will just clean up all the dino gunk holding the old seals together and you'd likely find yourself with a lot more burning oil.
