Tach Trouble

I'm attempting to install a monster tach. Everything is working great, except it is telling me that my idle is 800 and the highest i can rev to is about 3250. I have an independent tach, (tach-dwell meter) it is telling me the same thing when connected to the same prong on the negative side of the coil. What's my problem?
