Default oil pressure drops to nothing after about 20 mins

im trying to figure out whats going on here. after the car gets warmed up the oil pressure will drop to nothing at a idle. you can rev it good for a while before it jumps back up. seems to sit normal under normal driving conditions. i dont know if the sending unit is to blame yet. i get no funny noises or indications of of oiling isuses other than the gauge dropping to 0

Hey... My 87 GT did the same thing... Oil pressure gauge showed okay pressure when cold, then after it warmed up or when I drove it, when in neutral or just idling, the pressure showed very low reading. Most people thought it was the pickup screen, oil pump, or worn bearings... Turned out to a 10 dollar oil pressure sending unit right next tot he oil filter. Replaced it, and all is well within norm. I also did not have any leaks, smells, pinging, no other signs of trouble. My engine runs very strong, and even though I have 109K on her, she was never abused. Have you tried the oil pressure sending unit yet? Might be worth the 10 bucks just to replace it. You never know.. Could be that simple..

If you are going to all that trouble why not just put on a mechanical guage to see what the pressure really is. When I bought a mechanical for the bronco I put it on the mustang temporarily just to see if the stock guage was accurate. takes less then ten minutes and I think the guage cost me $20.

perform a mech test, if it does the same with the mech gauge and the pick up screen is not plugged, = time for a rebuild

Or if you are a cheap bastard like me some 20w50. My bronco gets 6psi when it is warm with thick oil, and it runs fine. It is low on power, and is going to die on my one day but it is cheaper then a rebuild and since I only paid $300 for the thing running I think I will be ok........
