Default Ram Air ??????

I just recently purchased a 86 LX. The previous owner mounted a plastic scoop that mounts under the passenger side bumper. It connects to a tube that runs up the inside of the fender to a airbox that contains the airfilter element. Im sure his thinking was to pull the cold air from the font of the car and force it up to the filter.
Im just curious if anyone out there is running a set up like this and what are the general opinions of the set up / Ive been looking around the web and havent been able to find alot of info on it. Im wondering would I pick up better air flow with just a standard cold air intake or ram air set up from one of the popular manufacturers{BBK,K&N ect..)

I've seen kits like that in CJPony catalogs. I've heard they are crap, which makes sense. Being as to how they are down in front of the car, closer to the road, means it's more likely to suck up water, dirt, debris etc. So IMO anything is better than that version of ram air.

They are good for picking up junk into the inlet tube. A friend bought a 91 LX with one of those kits. The car ran fine then one test and tune night at the track it started losing power. We checked all the usual things to check and nothing was wrong, then managed to borrow a scanner.....and got a MAF code. Take the mass air meter out and there's a tree frog plastered on the screen. In my opinion, you'd be better off with a regular BBK or K&N kit.

the theory is ok... the practicalcality of it is not depending where u live.

biggest problem is it will suck all kinds of crap up and you need to clean filter about every month. you'll find sticks, cigarette butts etc.

the other is water..... if it's wet out you'll be sucking in rain water as well.

in itself, i think they proved that there is really no "ram" effect til about 100 mph

i would ditch it for a str8 line cold air kit. replace all the rubber stuff with aluminum to eliminate those ribs, especially in turns. the key is velocity, and ribbed tubing hinders it.

a cone filter directly on the end of the meter will kame a diff too, ideally you want to shield it from the fan but either way is better than the extra 90* to go in the fender
