Default Question on distributor

I have a 1994 5.0, and my pickup coil busted and I changed it easy. But what I wanted to know is, what spins the distributor, is it the gear? because when I put my finger in the distributor hole, I didn't feel for a gear or what turns that gear.

The helical gear that is on the end of the camshaft in this picture betwen the first cam lobe and the area where your timing chain sprocket mounts.

the cam gear for the dizzy is far enough down that you shouldn't be able to reach it...unless you have loooong fingers.
