Default Horrible starting noise - shaved flywheel teeth

This is latest in a very long running issue.

5+ years ago I was adding metering block to secondaries of my Holly carb and something didnt go right. Cylinder flooded and I got a hydraulic lock.

The next week I get offer to take 2 year assignment in CA, I get car started with a slight tick that goes away once oil pressure is up (70PSI) and car goes into storage. After that car goes into garage for 3 1/2 years because new house has more pressing needs.

Good news is that 2 weeks ago I spend some time draining cas and car fires right up, love that Sta-bil. Drive around the neighboor hood EVRYTHING feels and sounds normal.

So here is the issue, there is a horrible knocking noise during startup which stops once the car is running.

First thought is this is related to the hydraulic issue 5+ years ago. I have never resolved what if anything occured during this event and durring this startup the engine didnt produce any noise.

I went through and re-adjusted the rocker, everything looks good but noise is still there. I pulled the starter, it looks fine but I find that I have 8 teeth on the flywheel that are missing.

What I'm trying to figure out is if this was due to the issue 5+ years ago or related to the recent start up (although I turned over the engine by hand)?

Pull transmission, remove clutch assembly, and replace flywheel.Take starter to shop get it checked out. pia no quick fix. Just get parts checked. If is a manual you can buy just the starter ring.
