Angry starting problem with my GT, gurus help!

Hi I have an 89 Gt 5.0 automatic. I went to start it today and when I did it continued to turn over and wouldnt stop until the battery was dead. After charging the battery I tried to put the ground cable on it start to spark and smoke a little. What is making it do this? I am thinking its the ignition stuck in the start position. the starter is good its been tested and its fine, any help will be appreciated. My mustang is my baby and it sucks, thanks!

i had the same issue on mine, starter checked out fine as well. i ended up going through 2 solenoids before one would work ok. I would try replacing the solenoid by the battery that's mounted to the fenderwell, that was my issue with the same symptoms.

Well I just went up to advance auto and got a new solenoid, that wasnt the problem. It turned over ok at first, then it started to do the same thing again. Couldnt this be in my ignition? Sometimes the key dnt go in all the way, it locks up, and one time I had the key out and was able to turn it over. Could this be my problem?

sounds like the culprit, get a new ignition switch. its not a hard install at all. just hope that the screws don't have the heads broken off of them. mine were just tamper proof bolts, which look like a torx bit with a hole in the middle. you can use some good pliers and strength though. good luck!

unplug the switch? the switch is completely out, like to where there is nowhere to put a key, and its like something is stuck to a position trying to start my car. I still have the hot hooked to the battery but the ground is off, and I cannot put the ground back on the battery without the engine automaticall trying to turn over. somethings stuck

so you have both the ignition lock cylinder and the ignition switch out? they are two separate components.
