I'm having a little better success rate now but now that I drove it w/o shift boot I noticed when the shift is going left and down (into second) the shifter is rubbing dead against that plate on the left side? Could that be a problem?

it could be that the shifter is really worn out, look around on craigslist and see, there's a guy somewhere near here with a hurst shifter he's been trying to sell for a while. If you'd rather I could bring a stock shifter for you to try out next week (my shops out west and i'm heading there this weekend)

on a side note how to set the shift stop correctly

car off place it in second (or fourth) and tighten the bolt so there's around 2 cm clearance between the shifter and the bolt, tighten the lock bolt and run it through the gears to make sure they all fully engage (with the car still off) and then take it for a drive and see how she does

If you could do that I would really appreciate it.
