Intermittent Deep Knock at Idle

I have a 95 GT and there is this bad knock that I'm hearing that sounds like is coming from around the cylinder head not the bottom of the block, it doesn't have a pattern either it just knocks randomly if I was to describe the knock it sounds like someone is taking a hammer and striking the motor. What could it be?

When you rev the engine, does the knocking go away after a loud pop?
