5.0L (1979-1995) Mustang Technical discussions on 5.0 Liter Mustangs within. This does not include the 5.0 from the 2011 Mustang GT. That information is in the 2005-1011 section.

Big job: 5.0 drop

Flywheel on? Use flywheel wrench. Alignment dowl and large screwdriver. Bolts in rear of crankshaft and pry bar. So much easier to walk around engine on stand then to try do same in engine bay. Replace gaskets while is on stand. Of course while it is apart will be hard to resist spending for a fresh rings, bearings, or wish a year from now you had.

Yes. I plan on replacing a lot of parts before dropping the engine back in. All i have to do is wheel the stand out of my cluttered garage. How difficult is it to install new cams on this engine? I know some engines are more difficult than others.

I mean, more a long the lines of standard, preventative maintenance.

Out of b blatant curiosity, what exactly went wrong with the cobra swap, if the motor is in there some work had to have been done to the motor mounts / crossmember / shock towers and if its a real cobra motor you've got a gem. In the end its your car / money I'm just curious

The full story: My brother started the cobra swap about 5 years ago. He ran into a few snags which slowed him down, he went to college which stalled and ultimately killed the project. It has been sitting in the driveway since. There isn't anything wrong with the cobra motor, not that I know of. I've just heard that it is a really difficult swap. Instead, I want to restore the stang back to it's original condition.

I don't think any of the mounts/crossmembers or shock towers were changed. If they were, i'll be continuing the 4.6 as I'm not in the mood to start re-welding back to original. I just want the damn thing to run.

So, i might actually keep the 4.6 since the 5.0 transmission has some issues in 3rd and the clutch was modified for the new 4.6. Brand new A-frame installed to fit the 4.6. All i need is to custom the oilpan to fit. Dry oil sump anyone? Yea, right.

What do you mean, if it's a real cobra motor?
