what is EGR/ axle question
ok heres the details 1991 gt mustang 302 in progress of ps pump relocation to run shortened belts ive seen online here that theres a setup that isnt emissions compliant which doesnt bother me that can remove all the egr my questions are as follows
1.what is it and what does it do?
2.if i decide to remove it is there any benefit?
3. does it require a tune?
4. if not what parts are sugested?
and for my axle questions
1.how involved is just a swap with new bearings
2.should i be worried about my housing with a bent axle?

Alright, let me see
1. EGR- exhaust gas recirculation, does what it says to improve emissions and maybe add 1-2 mpg further reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exhaust_gas_recirculation
2. Depends on your personal views, I consider it too time consuming for the 3 horsepower you might gain on that stock motor, of course the cheap bastard way is to just cap the vacuum line.
3. your crap is stock (cai and exhaust doesn't count) so nothing really requires a tune, it will throw codes though
4. I have no idea what you're asking here, you mean upgrade it? no such thing, it will help to have it all functioning or completely removed.
Axle swap
1. Its a good day-weekend depending on how technical you are and how good you are at not breaking things, experienced people can do it in a few hours.
2. How exactly did/is the axle bent? if you have a straight edge check the axle tube for a warp.

1) As stated above. However, people think that you are pumping hot gas into the cylinders, which is false. The EGR gasses are Inert which are cooler than the cylinder temperatures. I would leave the EGR on to be honest.
2) The only reason most people remove these from high performance motors is to reduce the chances of running lean.
3) If your removing the Smog and A/C, it should not require a tune. It will make the engine bay look cleaner and give you that extra room to work on the motor.
4) If your not sure when the last time the vehicle was tuned, id go ahead and tune it. Dont forget to get a PCV valve and a Breather filter for the lower intake manifold. These are always over looked when people do maintenance on there vehicles.
Axles -
1) Im sure you canfind a write up around here or online on changing those.
2) How is the axle bent? Id replace it the same time as doing the bearings.

cooler than cylinder head still ==really hot, but yes there's some time for it to cool from the heads to our intake (don't understand fully the 5.0 setup)
and sense the egr is vacuum operated it doesn't work at wot so agian, a lot of work to remove and the only real effect is a cleaner engine bay, which is very important to some people.

ok what im hearing makes sense if some time in the future i redid the top end would removing the egr be a better idea then?
and the axle was bent at my highschool brand new tarmac just enough rain to get ti wet an some crappy tires went round a corner throttled it alittle too hard then couldnt get her slowed down went over the hard stop curb parallel to it bout a 10 or so degree bend in the axle plate that holds the studs... everything else looks fine i have new axles i need to buy bearings i wanna do it right...

Yup on the EGR delete then. However, some poeple here have eliminated there EGR on a stock setup AFTER using an EGR eliminator kit (search FTW). From my standpoint though, im leaving my EGR system on until i decide on the future of my GT
