Spark plugs jumping fire
#11
Electrical current will follow the path of least resistance. If your spark is arcing from the spark plug wire caps on the plugs, I'd replace the wires with a decent set. Don't skimp and buy the $14 set from Autozone. And as stated above, replace the plugs too.
Oh, and just a FYI, next time just start a new thread with any questions you have. Digging up an old thread from years ago is usually frowned upon.
Post back with what you find....

Just to clarify, are you seeing a spark "arc" from the spark plug wire boot around the plug to the head itself. Is that what your calling a flame ?
Edit: I reread the thread again and noticed you never called it a flame. But just need some clarification.

Took the motor out
New gaskets all the way through
Timing kit
Reseated some valves, some of both intake and exhaust valves were stuck open

Your negative cable getting hot is a great indicator that you DON'T have a good ground or the cable itself has internal corrosion. Visually inspect every inch of the cable for cuts or rub thru's. Take both ends off and clean surfaces to bare metal. A good clean connection is critical.
I'll bet this solves your problem....
