Default Overheating but..Not Overheating!?!?

Hey Guys - I am new here - been lurking, but figured it was time to sign up!

I have a black 95 GT 5.0 with 135K on it - dont know much about the history - atleast not the TRUTH, but its got longtubes for a manual that are digging into the side of the auto tranny, so I'll assume it wasnt the most respected car - but it is in beautiful shape, amazing paint, engine looks unmolested, runs great, synthetic, new tranny, etc.

Problem is.. it seems to always run cold!? it finally just started to climb to mid normal during long drives in traffic, but now its running sluggish when it gets there - tranny shift patterns seem off, like it is wrong gear - car has 4:10's so its very obvious when the tranny is in wrong gear - the shift kit probably isnt helping either. When its warm, if you lay on the gas the RPMS climb very slow.

I checked under the hood.. heard a ticking as it cooled down, like every 10 seconds a KINK, like cooling metal - but no steam, no real funny smell. Main hose to waterpump was hot as FAHHK, I opened the radiator and coolant poured out for a while... I checked the overflow res, it was still at normal - I had added distilled water since the coolant in the radiator was pure/undiluted, but it doesnt appear to be mixing. I blew into the hose that comes off the neck of the radiator and it did make bubbles in the overflow, so obviously that line is clear.. but, I dunno.

I dont think my fan is kicking on - But then again, it might not think the car is getting hot enough - any thoughts on this guys!?

drain the coolant, put a 50/50 mix in it. Is your speedometer recalibrated properly? that would explain some of the shifting issues you are having.

as for the ticking sound from the exhaust. that's completely normal. even NEW cars do it.

also, make sure the car has a thermostat. Alot of stupid people think its a god idea to run without one. Especially in your neck of the woods.

Well the radiator is 1/2 full now, thought maybe i'd just add distilled water, but ill drain it tonight instead.

Where do I find the thermo? I heard it was behind the waterpump but I dont want to go tearing **** apart without being sure.

My speedo is off by 10+mph, but the car runs fine when cool

the t-stat is on the intake follow the top radiator hose from the rad to the thermostat housing on the intake and take that off. its right there. also what size wheels are you running on the car? your speedo is prob off from the gearing change but larger or even smaller size wheels can throw off the speedometer to.

^^This^^ The 91 I recently got was never warming up properly so I figured it didn't even have a thermostat. Sure enough I pull the t-stat housing and it wasn't there.

I got 17's all around - 245's in the back - its def from the gears.

Tonight I am going to check the fan, maybe get a new relay or aftermarket sensor for that, and also check for a t-stat

Does anyone have any links to pics of it and where it is so i am sure not to fahk this up?
