Default What should Temp Gauge read when engine is COLD?

Just picked up a 94 GT 5.0 and it has the " White face" gauges on it. I'm wondering if the previous owner put the needle back on incorrectly?. What should the temp gauge read when the car is off and hasn't been running for over 12hrs or so?

Mine reads what it last read which is about the A or L on NORMAL. I would think that the needle should fall all the way over to the C (Cold) when the ignition is off. I dont know if I'm running hot or not either because its always running at around the L on NORMAL but think that the gauge just isnt calibrated.

Am I correct in thinking this?

On another note, after I start the car it will go down to the far left of NORMAL, almost to the C but rise to almost the H HOT after about 3 minutes of running.

you cant rely on the stock gauge to be accurate.

Yeah I figured they weren't very accurate but should the gauge read what It last read when running when the engine is shut off and checking the gauge a day later?

If I'm running close to the close to the L in NORMAL and I look at the gauge after the car has sat for a long time, it still reads at that L until I start it. I figured it would drop down to C when the ignition is shut off.

When i turn my 98 gt off the cluster stays at the exact same spot it was when it was running. It only moves back down to cold when i put the key back in several hours later. And he deff put the needle back on wrong or your car has a really high temp thermostat lol. The needle should hang around the R on the [NORMAL].

Thanks, so that's normal.

What does your gauge read as soon as you start it when the car has been sitting for more than 8hr's.

FIXED!!!

FYI- if you try to position the need back a bit it will still default back to what it was when the ignition is turned on so moving it will do nothing.

My problem was that the needle was not on the cluster all the way so the temp gauge would just skyrocket to the right after about 5 minutes of running. I pressed it it a bit more securely to the cluster and this morning it read C COLD when I started it and on the highway it was reading around the M in Normal instead of H (Hot).
