Default Oil Consumption

My '89 GT is consuming about 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles. It has 57,000 original miles, and does not leak any oil, and never smokes. The previous owner did a mild cam upgrade. So, the question is, where the hell is the oil going? I'm thinking it might be getting sucked into the upper intake through the pcv. I'm going to replace the pcv and screen soon (if it needs replacing), but it looks like a royal PITA to get to it. Any other thoughts? How much oil is "normal" to burn? What type of oil do you suggest? I am using Valvoline 5w 30... should I go with synthetic? A different grade oil? As always, your insight is most appreciated!

Moving up to synthetic is always a good idea. I suggest sending a message to unleashed beast. He is pretty much an oil expert. Tell him your mileage and how you drive the car and he will recommend something that will work in your application. As far as oil is concerned he is the man

1 qt per 3k is actually normal consumption believe it or not

how certain are you its consumption and not a leak that burns b4 it reaches the ground ????

and is your mileage accurate ? carfax certified ?

and yes....synthetic is a must. for every reason out there...performance, longer intervals, superior lubricating......etc

walmart has 5 qt jugs of mobil 1 for $22 or $27..........o'reillys has a special here and there.... 5qts of their syn + a mobil 1 filter for $19.99

even if you use the oil in your mower or boat motor...thats a $12.99 filter

im just saying

Thanks, Nitrous Bob. Yes, the mileage is carfax certified. I don't know for sure that it's not leaking oil, then burning it off before it hits the ground... anything is possible, I suppose. I like the idea of running Mobile 1. What grade do you recommend 5w30, 10w 30, etc?

either or is fine but running a synthetic won't cure the oil consumption, just cost you more per every qt you have to add.
