Default 95gt motor trouble - stalled, wont start

I got on 95GT auto from a stop light and around 3000rpms, the car stauled, rpms went to 0 and the car shut off. I pulled over and it did not start. The car turns over but just doesn't start. Also, I found a small square magnetic piece inside of my distributor and I'm curious if I need a new one. The fuel pump wines when i turn the key into the ready position and I have a check engine light. Any other most likely possibilities or troubleshooting steps I should take first and foremost?

I will switching out the plugs/cap/wires/rotor and possibly the distributor, but I am wondering if this COULD be my timing chain? Would the car still turn over or sound ok when turning over if the timing chain broke?

I found a small square magnetic piece of metal sitting on top of the distributor screw underneath the cap. What is that? It appears broken off...
