93 Brakes
I've been noticing a problem with my brakes that seems to get worse over time. First of all, I have checked the shoes on the back and the pads on the front, and they are fine. The master cylinder is full of fluid.
For normal stopping I haven't noticed anything. But with hard stopping for an emergency or going down a steep hill I can push the brake down hard and the brakes do not lock up. I've been in a few cases where I thought I might hit something.
Where should I start troubleshooting? I've noticed that when I press the brake pedal that I can hear air gushing. Not sure what needs to be done.
I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

Does the pedal slowly go to the floor with firm pressure?
When you checked the brakes did you have the tires off and check the front and rear pad and rotor surface of the front wheels. It sounds like you could have have metal-to-metal contact (that air gushing sound).

Yes it does.
Yes, I checked the all of that and they were all good.
The idea that the booster needs to be replaced sounds good to me.

Pedal to the floor is a master cylinder issue (bad seals). How dark is the brake fluid, Carmel color?
It's possible that you have a double whammy though by the 'sound' of it, booster and master.
Check the line going to the booster and make sure there are no air leaks. Get under the hood, rev and hold the engine RPM while you have someone press the brake pedal. See if you can find the source of the air noise.
Before replacing your booster if that is a problem, flush the brake lines and see if the brake pedal still goes to the floor. If it does, you'll need to replace the master cylinder too.

I looked at the master cylinder the other night and thought the fluid did look caramel in color. The air noise sounds like it's coming from the floorboard. I've got to replace the radiator first before I can do any engine testing. The nozzle at the top where the radiator hose attaches broke off this morning.
