Last week I heard a knocking type sound, it was brief, not everyday, and only when in park. The when I started the car last Thursday, I heard the knock, then a loud pop, and now it is making an awful almost flapping like noise. Kind of sounds like air coming out of a small opening and smells slightly of gas.
It is a 2001 Mustang with about 180k miles. In the last 2 years it has had the transmission replaced and the intake manifold.

I admitt I really do not know anything about cars and lost my job 3 months ago, so money is tight. I can't drive it as it is running rough, making that noise, and smells like gas. I don't want to watse money towing it to the dealership until I can get an idea of what is wrong.

Any help?

Have you inspected yet? Possibly a fuel line rupture which would also cause a rough running car with any load, but sounds like a belt snapped
