Default 88 mustang gt issue!

hi all im new to this so bare with me....i bought an 88 gt today from nh and was drivung it home to ct about 2.5 hours....drove fine for about 2 hours then all of the sudden temp gauge went from 160 to 250(15 min span) and shut car down after motor started making noise.....got it to a gas station some how.....let it sit for a while coolent was not in sight in the fill ...so filled to cold level car started and had some white smoke coming from tail pipes drove a little further and started blowing maybe coolent from oil fill cap with decent pressure for about 1 min.....let sit for 30 min motor was about 150f and started fine and no smoke....but had it towed anyway just in case....any ideas whats going on?

you blew a head gasket........why would you continue to drive it until it made noise makes no sense to me when you knew there was an issue with rising coolant temp, hopefully all that is wrong are just head gaskets and you didn't cook the motor. perform a block check to verify head gasket issue and monitor coolant loss, check oil and see if it is milkshake color now. good luck

Well I would have pulled over long before but I was on the mass pike no.safe place to.stop at that point....oil looks fine....I.can start it up now motor sounds fine no smoke but have not got it up to temp....I found the coolent leak its being fixed now and I will have it pressure tested ...

And for the record I.wasn't driving it that hit the temp.climbed when car was parked.....
