Default what size cam?

I have a 86 5.0 roller motor with stock 86 heads, and the motor has flat top pistons. The heads do have 1.7 roller rockers in them. I was wondering if there is any way i can put a aftermarket cam in this motor without messing up the valves?

Thanks

Before you feel the benefits of any cam swap take those heads and throw them in the dumpster. You will be much more satisfied with a head swap than a cam swap. But if you do both then you will be really satisfied. I run the motorsport Z-303 and love it. Good luck!

Heads really arent in my price range at the moment. I was just going to put a spring kit on them and hopefully get a cam to work with the 1.7 rockers. Anybody else have any suggestions?

Those heads are the worst heads ever made. Even if you change them to a newer year stock head you'll be in better shape. Dont try to polish a turd. Save the money and get heads.

What year stock heads would you recommend? I figured i could just send them to the machine shop and have them dipped and milled and put a spring kit in them. What size cam would i be able to use with those heads and the 1.7 rockers? Thanks for the help.

i know this doesn't help much, but i would have to agree with lloyd. save up 800-1100$, and get some nice heads. or just look on eaby or the classifieds

You have an '86 motor??? You can pretty much forget the cam swap then. You will have to have major work done to fit a cam and heads. The only thing an '86 motor can take is either a head change (to the newer stock 5.0 heads) or a rocker swap. I see you already have the rocker swap. The '86 motor came with flat top pistons with no valve reliefs in them and have very MINIMAL clearance between them and the valves. Before being able to upgrade that motor, the pistons will have to be fly cut. It would be cheaper to get a newer 5.0 from a yard and swap it out. The '86 heads ARE junk. Small valves and a terrible combustion chamber. You can go with the E7 heads off a newer 5.0 but you will have to give up your 1.7 rockers and go back to 1.6's.
