Well the hoses being firm is a pressure issue, replacing the radiator cap will fix that (or should). That wouldn't stop heat though. If the hoses are hot, you should have heat. Take the hoses off the heater core and try to run some water through the core, see if it's plugged.

if you're heater core was plugged your engine would be overheating.
Not losing coolant? Tstat installed and working correctly?
replace the radiator cap. pressure will go back up and your system will be good again.

well since i had heat before i swapped engines im wondering about the heater hoses... the two that connect to the heater core.. does it matter which is which? they werent connected on the car i took them off of so i just connected them to my car when i swapped the engine over.. would coolant not flow properly through the heater core if they were to be crossed? or does it really matter which way the hoses are connected to the core???
