Question confused on CAMS!!!!

Hey guys im new here and i have a 1985 302 stang i want to put a cam in but im very confused on which to choose???My 5.0 is bone stock at the moment and ive already been advised to change the pistons out for ones with valve reliefs so i can run a decent cam.I would like to know what cam is good for my needs, this motor will be a mild street motor with typical bolt ons long tubes,3inch ex,gt40 heads and the usual.Im running stock bottom end with most likely new pistons and rings being the only addition.I want a cam that lopes pretty good at idle but will carry me to 4500-5k rpm.I was told to buy the roller conversion from ford racing with the b303 cam but ive heard some horror stories about this cam,i would like to have a list of everything i need to convert it to a roller but i need help with choosing a GOOD CAM for my setup and if the roller conversion is possible for me i would love to do it and what lifters, roller rockers, pushrods and valve springs to buy. Thanks
PAT

The motor is actually from a 1985 thunderbird elan so i was told from the previous owner and it has an aod tranny now but will be 5 speed when the motor is cammed. And it looks to be like a carb with fuel injectors on top of the intake.

A stock HO cam will do you just fine and carry you to 5k with no problems.

that is a CFI setup....

Leave the exhaust at 2.5 inch...

are you going to do heads as well? It doesn't make much sense to me to pull the heads off to install a performance cam and then put the restrictive stock heads back in.

This summer I put in trickflow 170 cc twisted wedge heads and just matched it up with their stage 1 cam. The twisted wedge heads allow you to run a bigger cam because of the twisted design and don't need cut or replace the valves. The cam also has a nice sound to it.

.
it appears he has a flat tappet block, depending on the year block he may just be able to drill/tap the top for a spyder retainer and presto roller conversion ready for the h.0 cam, otherwise = no-go on h.o cam
