Default AOD Slipping when cold

Just wanted to get some insight before I went tearing the tranny out..

My 86 with an aod trans slips trying to get in 1st when it is really cold. In the summer it was fine until this winter when it started dropping into the 30s.

It will just free rev until it gets warm enough to catch and then it is pretty much a netural dump...

It has only happened twice so far and shifts fine after it gets going, sometimes it happens sometimes it doesnt.

Also my 1st to 2nd shift is long as hell when I put my foot down, sounds like my Mach 1 when the clutch was gone(T-5).

Thanks for responces in advanced.

probably in need of a new torque converter. Although it could be a band issue as well. It's a lot harder to diagnose a slip with an auto trans than it is a manual trans.

Remember the hart of an automatic transmission is the valve body. A torque converter is basically a hydraulic clutch assembly, by using centrifugal force & fluid pressure which is controlled by the valve body. It sounds to me that the valve body is not allowing enough fluid pressure to engage the First Gear Clutch Pack until it thins out. Possible causes: Sticking pistons, Cracked or hardened O-rings, varnish build-up, clogged fluid filter or anything else that will restrict fluid flow. If the trans. has got tons of miles on it & seen very few fluid & filter changes its probable time for a full rebuild. If you decide for the rebuild, buy a new or rebuilt torque converter its cheap insurance. Hope this helps.
