EGR question

EGR question
I have a 86 LX . The previous owner converted it over to mass air and he also removed all the smog stuff except the EGR. There are Trickflow Track heat heads with a B cam and a Cobra upper and lower. 30lb injectors CAI,Headers, no cats and some other stuff. The EGR is still on the car. It still has the vacuum lines hooked up and is still plugged into the wiring harness. Ive read a ton of info about how to delete and not to delete ect... My question is , how is the EGR serving any purpose if it isnt somehow connected into the exhaust system? I can only find a vacuum line and a electrical plug to the wiring harness connected to it. I would feel alot better if I could get this out of the engine bay. It is kind of ugly to look at.

The EGR injects exhaust gas into the air stream to reduce combustion chamber temperatures and therefore reduce NOx emissions. It was probably left attached to the wiring harness to prevent a check engine light. It was left attached to the EGR spacer(between throttle and intake manifold) because the previous owner was too cheap to buy a different EGR spacer without the hole for the EGR or didn't want to buy/make a plate to block the hole.
Even with an EGR delete plug(for the harness) the computer will throw a code. Disconnecting it completely triggers the CEL. Using the delete plug does not trigger the CEL but will still throw a code when you use a scanner. Only way to completely delete it is with a different computer like an AEM unit.
