Default HELP 1991 5.0 wont start after filling up at gas station

1991 5.0 automatic
Was hoping someone could shed some light on my problem. I filled up at my normal gas station and then my car wouldnt start. It turns over but was like there was no spark igniting the fuel. Had a friend look at it, but unresolved. He thought it was my fuel pump, so we replaced it after emptying the full tank...it wasnt the fuel pump. Here is some additional info after he looked further into it:
Getting spark to spark plug wires. When he squirted carb cleaner into throttle body, car fires up and stays running until it burns through the cleaner (bypassing injectors). Fuel making it to the rails via the fuel pump. He says the injectors arent turning on (not functioning). I read a few other threads but nobody posted any resolutions. Some possibilities I found are the ignition module on side of the distributor or the ignition pickup...and least likely the computer itself.

Any help or suggestions are GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I had the same problem with my 1990 5.0. Try the throttle position sensor that tells the computer where the throttle is setting at. If it is defective car will not start. Good luck!

Thanks 7 UP Mustang, ill definitely look into that. If you dont mind, where is this sensor located? Is there a way to test to see if in fact its the sensor or not without having to buy a new one just to test/check?

Unfortunately I gave my Chilton Manual to my daughter who now owns our old 7 UP Mustang. I wanted to keep it in the family! Google and you will find all kinds of info on the TPS.

here is a diagram http://www.veryuseful.com/mustang/te...ng_Diagram.gif

Before I did any of this, I would take a mechanic's stethoscope or a long screwdriver to listen to the injectors to see if they are clicking just to make sure your buddy was right.

Thnx TrimDrip... excellent links. I'm at work still, but will be following checklists and will update if I find anything or run into a wall.

Well, your original post is correct. No injector pulse = bad pickup, bad module, bad computer (most likely is the pickup). Those are the only components that dictate when the injectors fire.
If you got loads of money, just throw a new distributor in. That will fix the pickup and module. Computer needing replacement is a long shot, I've seen MAYBE 3 of them go bad, ever. Disregard all the TPS talk, it's not related at all, and quite honestly I'm ashamed that people even mentioned it.

I have never seen it happen without holding the pedal to the floor but, if the tps sent enough voltage to the computer it would put the engine in flood clear mode.

My '89 5.0 decided to die suddenly on me one afternoon getting back to work from a lunch run...

Had spark, cranked and cranked but never started. TFI module had suddenly gone bad. Quick run to O'Reilly's to grab a new one. Swapped it out and retimed... Fired right up
