Default feul problem please help

hello, i have a 1990 ford mustang lx 5.0 notch back. it was originaly a 4 cylinder but when i bought it the owner before me put a 1987 5.0 carberated motor into it. it is pretty much stock but with a k/n intake. the person had a electric feul pump instead of a manual pump. now for the problem. every once in a while the car tends to shut down on me but if i wait like 3 mins it will start back up. so i tryed to change the electric pump for a holley pump. the holley pump does not need a regulator with 3/8 feul line. once i installed this it was still giving me the same problem. the pump was located up in the front of the car by the drivers front tire. i thought maybe it was heating up and shuting down on me. so i moved it to the rear of the car by the feul tank. now the issue i have run into is that the pump isnt picking up feul at all. i have just droped the feul tank last night and saw they gutted the the original hanger and pump that was in the tank originaly and ran a staight line. please help me fix this issue. ANY tips or advice would be really helpful.

ok thanks. i will try that. the holley red (12-801-1) fuel pump that im using says that it doesnt suck the fuel from the tank it pushes the fuel and that it is gravity fed. how should i set this up or is there a fuel pump that you recommend?

Won't work with a pickup tube like I posted. If you have a gravity fed pump, you need a fuel cell in the trunk and the pump underneath it (or similar design) to allow gravity to feed it and it pushes out afterwards. The pickup I posted will work with an in-line electric pump(non gravity) and a mechanical pump.

I recommended the pickup tube because you stated the previous owner just put a hose into the tank. I'm of the belief that you meant rubber hose, and if that's the case, a rubber hose will flop around and jump out of the fuel every now and then, or kink/bend in half, causing your issue. If you already have a steel pickup like the one I posted, a new one won't help.

yeah its a rubber hose and i wasnt looking to put a fuel cell in my dads car or kill the stock look of the notch back. thank you for letting me know that. so with knowing that out of the goodness of my heart i ripped apart my 302 and gave him my timing cover with the boss hole for a mechanical pump. the car is back up and running. im still going to get that metal line for the tank instead of the rubber. will i still need the return line hooked up or can i get a different pump that doesnt have one? thank you for your help.

I'm pretty sure theres no return line there, it looks it but I think they're joined at the fitting. Carb setup shouldn't have a return line anyway.
