1988 Mustang Fuel Pump Problems? please help
Okay, So i picked up an 1988 convertible mustang a couple months ago. and i was driving it from michigan to south carolina, after a couple hours the fuel pump went out. so i stopped and got a brand new one put in, then it made it the rest of the way. but a week later the fuel pump went out again. so again i got it replaced with a brand new fuel pump (Since it was under warranty) but again, a week later the fuel pump went out again. I havent gotten a new one put in yet so its sitting in my garage. i was wondering if you guys would know any reasons that the fuel pump would be going out? it would be helpfull if i knew what was causing the problem.

What diagnosis processes did you go through to determine that you have in fact witnessed the deaths of 3 fuel pumps?
For instance:
Are you sure the relay was working when the pump was replaced all those times?
Are you sure that you didn't infact lose spark when the car died, and assumed you needed a pump?
I only question the story a bit because in my years of experience as a tech, I've never seen or heard of what you're describing.

Check the wiring under the front seat. That's where the fuel pump relay is on my 88. The dealer replaced my pump under warranty around 1991. They routed the + wire to where it rubbed against the metal edge of the pump hanger and eventually wore thru the insulation. Instead of a fusible link melting, the wiring under my seat started to melt. Check the harness and relay to rule out a problem there.
