Timing
I noticed when I was building my engine that for TDC the crankshaft keys were at the 12 o'clock position. When I installed my balancer, I noticed the crankshaft keys were at almost 10 o'clock, but the timing pointer is pointed right at 0* on the balancer.
It's no big deal, I would think with the timing point/balancer at 0* it is at TDC. Could someone enlighten me?

The balancer is marked for ignition timing, doesnt have much at all to do with mechanical timing! Before someone goes off on a rant, it does have a hint of mechanical meaning, as far as true TDC you need a degreeing wheel to get that exact number for your application.

you need to set tdc with a degree wheel/find tdc with a stop and wheel then you find which set of numbers to use on the aftermarket balancer, my aftermarket had 3 sets of numbers, once tdc is found you move / line pointer up with 0. do not trust keyways on cranks and or balancers to be machune correctly/dead on. Or for that matter, the prob could be in a mismachined timing gear set.

This is what I've got. The engine is on the compression stroke right now, intake and exhaust are both closed. The keys were pointed straight up when I was putting everything together, and that put cylinder #1 at the top

Holy crap, dummy moment. Definitely was using the wrong timing marks. It's going to be a long day lol
On a side note, what do you guys use to highlight which timing marks to use? Florescent paint or chalk?
