88 5.0L Hard start
Ello all, I have a 88 lx 5.0 and I am having problems with it when it starts cold. The car has 75xxx miles on it original and it's stock. I don't drive it that much since I drive my 93 5.0 as a daily. Right now it's gettin a new top and every time I start my 88 in the morning, it dies after about 3 seconds. So, it starts like normal, no long crank, and revs to about 1000 RPM, it starts coughing like it's starving for air and then dies. I immediately start it up again and it runs at 1200 until it gets to temp.
I'm thinking a tune up, and IAC valve. what you thinkin?

Id start by cleaning the IAC and throttle body . My 94 has an 89 engine in it and when I first start it up on a cold morning the idle jumps up to around 1,500 rpm for a few seconds then slowly drops till it settles at 750. I think the iac is probly dirty and not allowing the car to idle up high enough on the initial start.

Hmm... if it's not MAF I'd take a look into the MAP sensor being the culprit, possibly even the coolant temp sensor. Could be the IAC too, though I doubt it.
It takes the PCM a second or two to receive initial feedback from sensors that are included in it's open loop strategy, like MAP/MAF & ECT. Dying flat out after a couple seconds sounds like one of 'em is dead, and then upon restart the strategy goes pre-programmed limp mode. I'd wager the car runs rich as hell, all the time.

I will replace my MAF with a stock 55 mm from ford and the MAP. Is the ECT on top the block but underneath the plenum? Should be located inbetween two injectors?
And funny thing today, my fuel gauge sender don't work and I ran out of gas at 170 miles on a tank. So ya I guess it's running rich.

I'll see what I can do about the sensor

170 pretty damn good for a V8 and a 10 gal. tank. I thought anyway I get about the same but would get alot better if my foot would stay off the peddle.
also would get much better if I didnt live in alaska it's been 30 to 40 below the last couple weeks.
Car runs great at the temp tho. Loves the cold air lots of O2. not saying to much for me to F-ing cold!
I would clean out or even change with somebody the MAF see what happens

I don't have a 10 gallon, I have filled it up at 14.5 before. I wouldn't believe that I have a 15. I thought I had a 13 but it said 14.5 on the gas pump.
And I have to remember that it is 24 coming on 25 years old.... could be anything
