Default do i need to replace the whole steering column or what??

my steering wheel has alot of play in it...i was driving on some swisties the other day,and all of a sudden i had nothing then it grabbed..it felt like my front tires were skating on the road....theonly thing i found when i took the wheel off was that the nut looked stripped or worn reaaly bad.does this mean replacing the whole column or what?

steering column probably has nothing to do with your problem. i would check tie rods, sway bar links, struts, springs, bushings and etc but no column

play in the steering is usually associated with a worn steering shaft i.e. rag joint.

I have heard of alot of the rag joints going bad.
It is in the steering shaft between the rack and the firewall.

OK MAYBE i didn't explain it very well??? with the key out,and steering wheel locked i have about 3 to 4 inches of play....can the rag joint be felt all the way up to the steering wheel that way??...i do know my shaft runs through my LT's .....bushing probably cooked off??? the rack is brand new inner/outer tie rods are new sway bar is bent now....i only lose grip in the steering only on left handed turns.....i will double check evry thing you mentioned QUICK.....
