Default '94 5.0 Stalled and Won't Start

I've got a 94 GT with around 130,000 miles on it and while I was pulling out of my neighborhood two days ago it abruptly stalled. Today I tried to check for causes and found that there was no spark going to my spark plugs. I pulled a wire and put a screwdriver in it to see if it would spark and it didn't, I pulled a plug to make sure that wouldn't spark and that didn't either.

The plugs, wires, and distributor cap and rotor were all changed around 10,000 miles ago. The distributor cap and rotor have slight corrosion on them but it didn't seem like an excessive amount. I don't seem to have any power loss when I turn the key, the engine sounds normal but it won't start. There is no clicking in the starter or any noises out of the ordinary. I looked at all of the fuses and none are blown.

What should I look for? Is there anything else that I should check? Thanks for the help.

When you did this did you ground the spark plug or screw driver on the motor? It won't spark without a ground. Spark plugs get their ground through the engine block.

I don't remember if your motor has coil over plug or a coil pack. Either way, if you don't get spark check that the coil is getting power. If not, then go to the ignition module.

Good luck...

Coil to distributor. And he should still get a small arc if he holds the plug next to the block close enough. The plug itself won't spark but the spark will jump from the electrode to the block, another easy way to check for spark is to pull the wire from the coil but hold it close and listen for the spark

Any possibility you lost your timing chain? I've had a belt break sitting at a stop sign, luckily no interference and it sounded normal when I tried to crank it. After checking the coil it could explain the loss of spark...

I've never heard of a timing chain coming loose before, that would prolly be at the bottom of my list of things to check. I've heard the distributors going out.

Chain could snap just like my belt did, but it would probably be making noise. I would def go thru the ignition and coil troubleshooting first. But you could just pull the cap and see if the rotor is still spinning when the car is being cranked to rule it out.

It ended up being the corrosion on the distributor, I took light sandpaper and knocked it off and it started without any problems. Is there any reason why it would become so corroded that it would cause the car to not start with such a low amount of miles on the cap / rotor?

Thanks again for the replies.

The cap/rotor may have already been corroded when it was installed. Either way, I suspect the corrosion will come back. The distributer isn't sealed up properly and is letting moisture in which is causing the corrosion. Good luck...
