Quick alternator question! Also, car not charging.
THESE BLACK AND ORANGE WIRES SHOULD LIGHT UP A TEST LIGHT THAT'S GROUNDED TO THE ALTERNETOR CASING OR THE CAR RIGHT?????? (you can see where i had the test light grounded in this photo via the alligator clip.)
no power seems to be coming out of these wires according to my test light test. this is in an 88 5.0 w/ stock alternator (and replacement stock alternator)
1. The grounds should be good; I've double ground strapped the block to the frame and the battery cables look solid.
2. The battery holds a charge fine and charges with a battery charger easily.
3. I changed the alternator pigtail and the alternator itself which came with a new voltage regulator on it.
4. I even ran wire from the alternator straight to the battery and no charging took place.
5. the car has 1 electric fan on it and a normal headunit w/ plain door speakers which i haven't even turned on.
WHAT'S THE DEAL??

Are those the wires going to the plug on the alternator? If so they will only light up the test light if the car is running. And if I remember correctly only if they are all connected properly and sensing that the battery needs charging.

So the alternator shouldn't always be sending power out of these wires when the car is running?

no they don't sense anything. yes you should have power at those 2 thick wires when the alt is spinning. Technically they'll light up anyway because they go to the battery, but you should see a voltage jump between car off and car on.

So what would cause an old alternator thet passed the autozone test and a new (remanufactured one) to not send power out? Is it likely that both alternators are messed up or can someone think of something else? It's not the fuseable links.

That's what I was sayin^ if the alt isn't hooked up then the regulator isn't "detecting" anything about the battery and won't do anything as far as I understood. Connect the wires back up right. Take the alt off and carry it to a parts store. Most all of them do free testing. Battery as well. If those test fine then you have a wiring issue.....

PROBLEM SOLVED.
the green wire coming form the voltage regulator was bad. When i grounded out the regulator it worked. I just ended up running a new green wire w/ a 20a fuse to a HOT IN RUN (hot when car is on only; figured out what this meant the hard way) power source.
This simple diagram helped out a LOT! I didn't realize the green wire goes to a power source when i looked at Tmoss's diagram.
