When setting up the firing order 13726548 on a 1984 5.0, looking up on the net shows placing the #1 plug wire on the distributor facing the #7/#8 plugs? I would think if you have the pointer facing the #1 plug at TDC, that is where the #1 should go, not facing 7 or 8. Am I missing something?

You are probly looking at the non ho diagram witch is 15426378 Im not sure what you mean by facing, but there is a difference in HO and non HO

By the diagrams below you see the firing order starting with the number 1-3-7-etc.. By looking at the distributor diagram, the #1 plug wire is aimed between the #7 or #8 cylinder. I would think you would place the #1 plug wire where it faces the #1 cylinder when the piston is at TDC or near the #2 plug wire in your diagram below.

If your at tdc and your rotor is pointing to where the number 2 plug wire should be then your distributor is off quit a few teeth. TDC the rotor should be pointing aproximatly where the #1 plug is in the diagram.
