Gears
Hi guys I've some questions here I'm sure all of of you are familiar with. I'm wanting to put new rear gears in my 5spd 1987 gt and I've searched the forum but can't really find anything close to what I'm wanting to know. What I'd like is a step up from whatever gears would be the best gas mileage. In other words I'm concerned about the mileage but not enough to where I wouldn't like to have a little fun once in awhile. Also I'm needing either my tranny rebuilt or a new one and was curious what gears would compliment the rear gears. Please any info would be spectacular! Hope everyone had an awesome week and has fun this weekend :-) ~Q

Hold on
you've searched this forum for information on gear choices and couldn't find what your looking for ??? Are you trying to get banned lol.
I'll start, 3:55's would work good for you. It's the only logical choice.
EDIT: Do not read any other further !!!

Chances are you're going to get a t-5 with the same gears as any other t-5 in regards to ratio. I've got 3.73's and cruising at 100 mph from PA to Florida was pretty comfortable at 3k RPM. Actually lower RPM than my Ranger at 100mph.
I'd say 3.73s with a normal tranny... with a 6-speed... 3.55s.

Why so low a gear with a 6 speed??? I'd definitely go with a 3.90 or 4.10 in that circumstance.
And on the tranny gears, yes to an extent. If its just a regular T5 that most of us have, I dont think its worth the money swapping out individual gears. However, if you're in the market for an aftermarket transmission, then yes definitely. There is a difference between 5 and 6 speed ratios, which is also dependent on what you're doing: drag race, road race, daily driver, etc.

Lol oh this is nothing , there are some guys who get real but hurt when it comes to gears. And they think you have to go to 4.10s or don't do it at all.
The 3 of us are just messing with each other , cause we know its a personal choice.
All 3 of the options givin are a great upgrade over stock 2.73 or 3.08s
youll loose mpg with each one and the difference is minimum between the 3 .
It does matter what gearing your trans has , but not so much as you would imagine.
The autos and manuals use a slightly different 1st 2nd 3rd gear ratio but the final in overdrive is relatively the same.
Here is a page that may answer some of your questions about the transmission and what gear ratios the different models of t5 and aod use.

@ dawson1112: Awesome I'll look at that!
Cool this is the kind of info I was looking for! I'm prob gonna stick w/ a 5 spd. So it's starting to look like I'll go with either 3.55's or 3.73's... :-D

You don't need 4.10's if your engine has some *****.
