Okay so my speedometer went a little while back, I completely replaced it yesterday, but after installing it, realized that the old one wasn't even broken...

I took off the dash and hooked both the old and new one up to it and turned the other end, both made it move. I hook either into the transmission, put the car in gear and turn the tires (on blocks and once off) and it doesn't turn at the dash.

Needless to say I put the new one in, put everything back together, and I still have no speedometer.

I noticed when I installed the new one that there's a small assembly going into the transmission, which is where I presume the problem is.

Is this assembly easy to fix/replace, and if I do take it out, am I going to lose all my transmission fluid?

My car is a standard 1990 5.0 mustang GT.

Your speedo gear in the trans probly stripped off, no you wont loose all your trans fluid.


take the cable off and then remove the single small bolt that holds the speed sensor and gear in the trans. Should come out something like this one.

Man you need to be given a medal or something, pictures and all, thanks allot, I will pick up the part soon and fix it!

Alright so I pulled out the old assembly, brought it to Ford, got a new plastic gear with new teeth etc, tested it out by plugging in the speedo cable and turning it, the speedo in the car was was moving, everything looked good.

I stuck the assembly back in with the new teeth, and nothing, it wasn't turning.

I'm guessing now that it must be in the transmission, because I tested everything outside, and all was working.

On a side note, I stuck my finger in where the assembly goes to feel around, I felt the teeth on the inside from the transmission, they seemed fine, however I was able to turn them with my finger, not sure if that's normal.

Anywho I think I'm screwed because its inside the transmission? Do I have to pull that out to fix it.

Bummer ,

you have to pull the trans , and separate tail to get to the inside gear.

You will need to drain the fluid first ,

It can be done with it in the car but it is so much simpler to just pull the gear box and do it on a bench

Have you checked your speedo cable? The gear inside the transmission is tougher, and normally does not need replaced.

He said it works find when out side the trans.

When he stuck his finger inside the trans the inside gear spins freely , it probly brock the retainer that holds it in place.

Nice video, I'm almost tempted to try and pull the tranny and do it, although I don't have a shop or anything, just a driveway lol. Seemed easy, but I guess I would have to pull my exhaust as well to get it all out. My normal tranny shop charges 4 hours labour to pull/fix things in the tranny.

Maybe the pin that holds that gear came/broke off?

Originally when the speedo first went I was doing a couple of donuts, and after doing them I heard a ticking noise. That noise continued for about 2 days until finally something gave and the speedometer broke. I wonder if it was the clip rubbing against something till it broke?

Gonna have to see what my options are, I'm a recently graduated electrical apprentice thats pretty short on cash!
