installing timing cover questions

Blue is multipurpose. Black is more for oil resistance.

also, going to put the timing cover and water pump back on soon.
looks like the best plan would be to connect the water pump to the timing cover first, and then install the timing cover?
i assume this is correct because all the bolts that hold the top half of the timing cover to the block dont go on until the water pump goes on and i assume i want to be able to tighten the top half of the cover when installing to make sure the seal is good.

or, is there plenty of time to work with? like if i put the timing cover gasket in place, put the timing cover on using only the bottom half bolts, and then 20 minutes or so later i bolt on the water pump thus tightening up the top half of the timing cover, will i be ok?

when you are ready to install the cover , put the cover on first then the water pump , no need to wait just do it all in steps. You cant install the water pump to the timing cover first because the bolts that hold the top of the timing cover and water pump go all the way through to the block.

So put the timing cover up there with a couple bolts in the bottom , then put the water pump on and start putting in all the bolts. I cant for the life of me under stand why the gasket kit you bought didn't include the lower corner gaskets , but you need them . What brand gaskets did you get?

i bought a gasket kit from ford motorsports that was apparently for the entire engine, not specifically for a timing cover removal, which is why i suppose they didnt put the little corner pieces in because they gave me the whole entire pan gasket.

as far as putting the covers on, are you aware that there are two bolts that hold the water pump to the timing cover that do not go through to the block?

as far as waiting between the steps, i dont *want* to wait, i was just anticipating delays for whatever reason. for example, im going to have to put thread sealant/lock/whatever on at least some (all?) of the bolts when i put the water pump on, and never having done it before and also because im kinda ocd, i expect it not to go as quickly as i would like.

since i mentioned the thread sealant, i bought some stuff already based on what you guys have told me for the bolts that go into the coolant. i cant tell for sure if some of the bolts enter the coolant passage. if i just put this stuff on every bolt, is that bad? i mean, would some bolts be better off with lube?

these questions are probably beyond simple, sorry

oh, and for that autozone kit, thanks for th elink, except, i didnt check the price, but im guessing im not going to want to but that entire kit just for those two gaskets. more likely i would cut the corners off the extra gaskets i already have if need be.

edit: checked the price, $15. i might consider it. what would YOU do? cut the corners off the ones i got, or spend $15 (plus shipping maybe) to get these corner pieces?

Are you talking about the corner pieces where the timing cover sits on the oil pan? If you are - look at your oil pan gaskets. The corner pieces are part of those gaskets, not a separate piece. Are you replacing the oil pan gaskets as well?

yes, the corner pieces that get damaged if you remove just the timing cover. im not taking the oil pan off. i have the whole oil pan gaskets.
they do make the little corner pieces separately apprantly, im just trying to locate them without having to buy an entire timing cover gasket kit
alternatively i may just cut the corners off the oil pan gaskets i have

Yeah if you aren't replacing the oil pan gasket then you'll need the corner pieces that Dawson hyperlinked
