Default timing

i've been running premium fuel for a while now and decided to check/advance what my timing was. i took the spout off, started her up and saw it was at 10 degrees. i advanced it to 14 degrees, shut it off, put the spout back on and test drove. ran great. for the heck of it i looked at the timing and it was about 17 degrees. shut her down took the spout off and started her up and it was 14 degrees. is this just typical behavior and why the timing is adjusted with the spout off? thank you.

Normal, spout connects to ECM for timing control.
