no,

gt 40p heads are cheap and good but require mac headers or possibly hooker super comps.

gt40 heads are no good because the combustion chamber is way too big and flow much less than the p's.

look for deals on ebay

You should be able to find some GT40p's and Mac headers for about $500ish give or take. They can be pulled from a junkyard, the headers you will need to buy new or over off the Corral. They would be a nice upgrade though

so at the moment im estimating $200 or less to fix what i got now.

if i pull heads from a junker, wont i need to get them checked out? wont that cost money?
assuming the pulled heads can be had for $500, is the improvement worth $300+ more?

also, i just noticed my sig doesnt mention it (im gonna change it now) but i have headers already, ford shortys. now, they may not be anything special, but just in case, i figure i would note that in case this talk of getting some other headers could be eliminated from the equation

now, lets say im going to keep trucking with my gt40s. checking summit, replacement valves can be had for $13 each. would simply just replacing all my intake (and exhaust i guess) valves and moving along be stupid or could there be something wrong with the seats and i should send them out just in case?
i mean, the cost of the valves is going to be paid either way if i just replace them myself or if i send them to a shop for work.

im going to try and locate a shop with decent rep to work it all out as well, but you guys arent out to make any money off me, so i feel safer chatting with you

thanks all for the input.

My bad. I didn't see you had already upgraded your heads. I was thinking we were dealing with e7's. I would just have what you got checked out/fixed, unless you feel like shelling out for aluminum heads

Fwiw, my shop charged me $40 to swap out valve springs on my heads, so I wouldn't think replacing valves would be much more than that. Your estimate is probably right on par if they need milled (I doubt it).

hi,

junk yard heads should be 100.00 a pair.

i think they make a smog and non smog type, the non smog are hard to find but better.

yes they will need to be rebuilt too.

any old head might need guides.

you will maybe get 15 - 18 hp more from the p heads over your gt40 heads. is it worth it to you?

it would be to me but unless you drive it hard all the time it might not be to you.

your headers will not fit them.

im thinking i can replace the valves myself. just dont know if the heads need any repair.

funny story:
i was just thinking about the last time i drove the car i remember getting on it and thinking i wasnt getting enough out of it. i was thinking like, the rpms were there, but i wasnt accelerating like i should. i remember i wrote it off as just not having driven it lately and my memory was playing tricks on me or the tires just werent gripping or the clutch was slipping.
now it all makes sense.
i checked the other valves on the one head and 3 of them leak. 1 real bad, two others just a little.
will check the other head tomorrow

so taking my engine apart in what started out as a simple learning experience has discovered: at least 1 busted lifter, 1 damaged cam, and compression loss in at least 1 and maybe 3 cylinders. not bad.

ok thanks.
i drive (drove) the car hardly ever. if i get it back in tip top shape and cleaned up inside, i may drive it a few times a month just for a change of pace. i would be fine without the 15-18hp.
if i get a need for speed, i can always hop on my gix1000
