Thinking of buying a car with a blown T5... recommendations?
Hi guys,
I have the opportunity to buy a '90 5.0 with a T5 that's known to be broken. 3rd gear doesn't work and the whole thing makes a rattling noise anytime engine power is going to it. Question: What will it cost for a used T5 or to rebuild (assuming it's rebuildable)?... Please don't suggest putting an auto, because that's not even on the option list. I wouldn't bother with a 5.0 if it wasn't a 5-speed.
Anyway, the guy who owns the car could be on these forums, who knows, heh. A foxbody 5.0 was basically my "wet dream" car in high school (I'm 30 now). I have owned faster cars, really. I had a 2000 Camaro Z28 6-speed that I bought brand new off the Chevy lot. I miss that car, heh. Later I had a '95 Camaro Z28 A4 into which I installed headers, cam, roller-rockers, cat-back exhaust, K&N cold-air, ported MAF, etc. It ran pretty close to the stock 2000 Z28, since the LS1's have so much more power to begin with. Anyway, I think I would love a 5.0 if it's really clean, etc. They are definitely easier to work on than an LT1. Those are a bear!
So, basically the rest of the car is in good shape with under 100k miles on the whole car and original 302 with bolt-ons. Also it has a recent clutch, which hopefully can be re-used.
I don't know Mustangs NEARLY as well as I do 4th generation Camaros, so please bear with me. I know a T5 is a lot cheaper than a T-56, so I think I'm in luck. Let me know the plain truth!

RE: Thinking of buying a car with a blown T5... recommendations?
Damn. Well, I can get the car for $3500. Includes many extras (Edelbrock intake already installed, BBK headers, draglites, etc.). The interior is mint... exterior good, but paint only fair. Should I pay less since it may well cost me a grand for a trans?
Thoughts?...

I paid 3900 canadian for mine, 260,000 kms, body panels were misaligned, ran ok, but came with another 5.0 engine and a t-5.
3500 is too much with a blown tranny, who knows what else is wrong with it.
