Default Smog pump question

I hear some people remove it.
Doing so wont it screw up the oxygen sensor readings and in turn screw up the computer and end up perhaps with engine performance issues?

Why not?
If it sends air/oxygen into the pipes and the o2 sensor senses just that....?

It only sends air into the pipes for a few minutes at start up just enough to help heat up the cats, then it diverts the air to the atmosphere. By the time the 02 sensors are on line the smog system cycle is complete and all air is being diverted out. . Not to mention that the air is sent directly to the cats via a smog tube the 02 sensors never see that air. _
